Waypoint Sierra Consultants · Recruiting through RProblems

Bring operator expertise to programs developing Space Force capabilities in space domain awareness and combat power.

Discuss this role

About the role

Bring practical space operations experience into the development of new mission capabilities. This position supports programs in space domain awareness and combat power, helping engineering and acquisition teams understand what operators need and how a proposed capability will be used.

You will work alongside program managers, systems engineers, contracting personnel, and partner organizations. The central challenge is translating between operational needs and technical delivery: making the mission problem clear, identifying gaps in a proposed solution, and helping teams carry those findings into development and integration.

What you’ll do

  • Translate operator needs. Connect mission requirements with developer capabilities. Help make the expected operational use clear enough for engineers to design, integrate, and test against it.
  • Shape operational concepts. Contribute operations expertise to requirements, concepts of operations, system design, and command-and-control analysis.
  • Review integration and test work. Assess whether technical documentation and planned activities address the operational problem. Bring questions and recommendations into government and contractor discussions.
  • Support the transition into use. Help teams move prototype capabilities toward secure operational applications. Keep the intended mission use visible as the solution expands beyond an initial demonstration.
  • Support acquisition execution. Identify issues affecting delivery, contribute to acquisition strategy, and communicate recommendations to the government team.
  • Communicate decisions clearly. Prepare briefings and program updates that connect technical progress to mission needs and explain what needs attention next.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 14 years of space-systems experience. Four additional years of experience may substitute for the degree.
  • Direct experience in space operations.

What strong operational experience looks like

Be ready to discuss a situation where your operational knowledge changed a requirement, a design decision, or the way a capability was tested. A useful example explains the mission context, what the operator needed to accomplish, and the constraint that mattered.

Describe how you worked with engineers or developers to resolve the issue. What did you personally review or produce? How did the team decide the solution was ready? These examples help us understand how you connect operational experience to the work of a program office.

The role calls for clear communication across specialties. An effective recommendation makes the operational consequence understandable to both the engineer implementing a change and the program manager weighing its effect on delivery.

Clearance and work environment

The role is full-time and on-site in El Segundo, California, with 25% travel listed. TS/SCI is required, with an in-scope T5 investigation, SCI eligibility, and Continuous Vetting enrollment where applicable. Candidates must be willing to pursue SCI and Special Access Program access and complete a polygraph when required.

Compensation

The annual target salary range is $200,001–$240,000. Final compensation depends on qualifications and experience.
